Not All Heroes Wear Cape

Not All Heroes Wear Cape
Jericho kyosi Bungihan, Filipino Seafarer

Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear overalls, steel-toed boots, and navigate the endless blue with steady hands and unwavering hearts. They are seafarers. The quiet backbone of global trade, moving the lifeblood of the world’s economy from port to port. But their duty goes far beyond delivering goods; they are also guardians of the oceans, entrusted with the care of the very waters that give them purpose, identity, and a way of life. As shown in the picture: deep in the ship’s engine room, three crew members work shoulder to shoulder, cleaning a scorching-hot, carbon-choked exhaust gas boiler. It may resemble a scene from a sci-fi film —gritty, heroic, almost otherworldly—but this is no movie set. This is real life at sea. Grueling, relentless, and often unseen. Moments like these remind us just how demanding life onboard can be. Where courage isn’t in grand gestures, but in sweat, grit, and quiet resilience.

A powerful reminder: saving the ocean means saving ourselves.

As guardians of the Earth, we have a responsibility to protect the oceans. The health of our oceans is vital to the future of humanity. We must reduce pollution so the seas are no longer harmed by waste and sewage. We must fish sustainably so marine life can continue to thrive. We must safeguard ocean ecosystems so that every creature in the sea can live in harmony. This is not only an act of respect for the ocean – it is a commitment to our own future.

This is my first time to reach the top of the foremast. The ship was sailing. I had the idea to take a selfie at the top of the foremast. Before coming to the foremast, I prepare by bringing a selfie stick and my mobile phone. After changing the lightbulb. Take out the selfie stick and take a selfie with my phone’s rear camera. Because I want a wide perspective photo.

Foghorn's call

Foghorn’s call
Alessandro Pinto, Indian Seafarer

The fog horn’s sudden blast, and in that instant, the world shifts. This photograph captures that very moment, as the sound cuts through the air, sending a flurry of seagulls skyward. It’s a scene we can all relate to, a sudden change that makes you pause and look up. The ship’s mast stands strong against the setting sun, a familiar shape in the fading light. It’s like an old friend, quiet but knowing, holding steady through countless days and nights at sea. Below, the ship’s deck, deep in shadow, hints at journeys taken and destinations still to come. This vessel, for me, speaks to our own human need to explore, to push forward, carrying our hopes across whatever lies ahead. Then the birds erupt, dark shapes against the warm sky. Their flight feels like a sudden release, perhaps the letting go of a day’s worries, or the scattering of thoughts before a new focus. They trace paths through the last rays of sun, a dance of departure that feels both wild and right. They carry the day’s warmth with them, scattering hues of orange, gold, and blue across the horizon as they go. This image, with its play of light and shadow, and the memory of that piercing sound, makes you reflect. It holds a brief, fleeting moment, yet it speaks to something universal: the act of moving on, the bittersweet goodbyes, and the call of the unknown. It’s a quiet reminder that even as one chapter closes, life continues to unfold, full of meaning, if we just take a moment to truly see it.

Stowaway Owl

Stowaway Owl
Alessandro Pinto, Indian Seafarer

As the winds began to stir and the storm brewed on the horizon, this lone owl stood quietly—eyes wide, heart steady. It wasn’t just perched—it was present, reminding us that even in the harshest corners of our planet, life finds a way to watch over us. Onboard steel and salt, in a place designed for function over feeling, its presence softened the scene. A living soul among machines. A little miracle in feathered form. That storm wasn’t just weather—it was a wake-up call. A reminder that the ocean gives generously, but demands respect. In this moment, I managed to capture more than a photograph. It held a promise: that if we protect the oceans, maybe—just maybe—they’ll continue to cradle the fragile threads of life we sometimes overlook.
